The Learning Table & Teenage Kitchen

The Learning Table is an educational arm of The Long Table providing learning in a different environment. We want to encourage our passion for food and the connections it creates in other people.

We will be holding different groups for different ages to connect with our community, passing on our values of making the most out of the food we cook and eat, using locally produced food and building connections through the food we eat.

The Learning Table is headed up by Owen Taylor-Leach, who is looking forward to inviting so many of you to our home so your passions can thrive.

Amazing things happen when we eat together!

Teenage Kitchen 2023

After some time away and with support of one of our Social Footprint partners Steppes Travel we are exciting to announce the return of Teenage Kitchen at The Long Table. From September 2023 we will be creating opportunity for 2 groups of teenagers to come and join us and take part

What The Teenage Kitchen will look like

The course will be a 7 week course with between 6 to 8 15 & 16 year olds from all walks of life in the stroud area. The sessions will run weekly over the seven weeks for a couple of hours each evening. Over the sessions we will cover all the taste sensations.

The first week will be an introduction to the team and learn some kitchen basics and of course you’ll meet each other, you are very welcome to bring your significant adult to this first night.

Week two will be knife skills and a one pot chilli

Week three is pungent, kokumi curry and bread.

Week four is sweet and bitter, baking some cakes and learning some barista skills.

Week five sour and salty, burgers with pickles and chips.

Week six the big umami bbq.

Week seven the feast, a chance for you to use all the skills you’ve learnt and cook as a team for the guests you’ve invited.

At the end of each session and the course you will leave with a bank of knowledge and a handmade book full of information to help you continue in your food journey and the recipes you’ve cooked that are easily adapted into other meals (there may even be some extras from some of the friends of The Long Table)

There will be no charge for this course all we ask is for your commitment and the willingness to give it a go!

Teenage Kitchen - Past groups

The Teenage Kitchen started as a series of summer workshops for teenagers who want to learn to cook, held at our community food hall in Brimscombe, Stroud.

Local Brimscombe teenagers, Leon & Fran learned to bake in our kitchen in 2020. They set the ball rolling for a new series of workshops at The Long Table, called The Teenage Kitchen.

The inaugural Teenage Kitchen took place in summer 2020 over one week. We brought together a talented group of teens who had an appetite for learning and cooking!

The workshops covered kitchen basics like safety, food hygiene and knife skills, as well as baking, how to create full, nutritionally-sound meals and even a wildcard feast! That involved looking at the ingredients that were available and creating a slap-up meal.
